The legal minimum: 25/50/15
| Coverage | Arizona minimum |
|---|---|
| Bodily injury, per person | $25,000 |
| Bodily injury, per accident | $50,000 |
| Property damage | $15,000 |
Source: Arizona Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions. $15,000 of property damage doesn’t go far when the average new car costs far more. Most agents recommend much higher limits.
Coverages that matter in Arizona
- Uninsured / underinsured motorist. Plenty of drivers carry only the minimum, or nothing. Insurers must offer UM/UIM; it’s worth accepting.
- Comprehensive with full glass. Freeway rocks crack windshields constantly. Many Arizona policies offer zero-deductible glass.
- Comprehensive also covers monsoon hail, flood and wind damage.
- Roadside assistance. A breakdown on a 115ยฐF day is a safety issue, not an inconvenience.
Arizona is an at-fault state
The at-fault driver’s insurance pays. A dash cam helps; always exchange information and take photos.
Homeowners & renters insurance
- Flood isn’t covered by standard homeowners policies. Monsoon flooding happens outside mapped flood zones too, and flood coverage is often inexpensive there.
- Condos and townhomes: the HOA master policy usually covers the structure, not your interior, belongings or liability. You need an HO-6 policy.
- Pools raise liability exposure; consider an umbrella policy.
- Solar panels: if leased, the company may insure them; if owned, make sure your policy covers them.
- CLUE report: when buying, ask for the home’s insurance-claims history; it can affect your premium.
